DAY 5: Communication & Generous Listening

Over to you: Today’s Exercise

  1. In your journal, reflect on times where you haven’t been listened to. What did it feel like? How did you feel about yourself? How did it affect the relationship?

  2. Now reflect on the opposite: think of a time where you were listened to. How did the person show you they were listening? What was the impact of this on the relationship?

  3. Find time to talk with your partner, a colleague, your child, a friend - someone with whom you’d like to deepen your relationship.

  4. Aim to be listen with your ears, heart and body. Make sure you’re not distracted. Visualise what they’re describing. Ask questions if you need to get a clearer picture.

  5. When the listening (and conversation) is over, take time to reflect on how challenging that may have been to not interrupt, re-direct the conversation, tune out, predict what they were going to say or be judgemental/dismissive.

  6. What did you learn about yourself and your listening skills?
